Pre-Kindergarten

Pre-K is the year before kindergarten, and the day is built to look more like one: longer work periods, a job chart, journals and small-group reading. Our goals follow the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards, which is what kindergartens in School District 54 expect children to arrive with.

In the spring we practice the things that make the first week of kindergarten hard: carrying a folder, opening a lunch, lining up, and sitting for a longer story.

Questions Parents Ask About the Pre-K Room

Will my child be ready for kindergarten?

That is the point of the year. We assess each child against the Illinois standards in the fall and spring and share the results with you, and we will tell you plainly if there is something to work on at home.

Do you offer kindergarten?

Yes. Children who turn five can move up to our Kindergarten room. Families who choose School District 54 or a private school get a copy of their child's spring readiness check to take with them.
